Michael Laey and Jim Larkin Speak Out Against Presidential Pardon of Maricopa Sheriff Joe Arapaio

Front Page Confidential co-founders Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin stepped into the spotlight this November when they protested President Trump’s pardon of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Arpaio, who gave an order to arrest Larkin and Lacey for the crime of disclosing grand jury investigation info ten years ago, was on the losing end of the federal civil rights lawsuit Melendres vs. Arpaio but was pardoned by Donald Trump.

Arpaio had previously come under fire for a variety of immoral practices as sheriff, most notably the death of various detainees who were held in jail cells that he was in charge of.

In response to the Presidential pardon after Mr. Arpaio was found guilty of criminal contempt, Mr. Larkin and Mr. Lacey have accused President Trump of pardoning Arpaio to pander to white nationalists who love Arpaio for his anti-Mexican political stance.

The duo have been in conflict with Sheriff Arpaio since he jailed them in 2007. They were jailed for disclosing information from a grand jury investigation using their newspaper, the Phoenix New Times.

The grand jury investigation in question, however, was an investigation into the practices of Mr. Larkin and Mr. Lacey themselves, and the pair claim that it was part of a long-term set up by the Sheriff. Arpaio, they say, began the investigation into them so that they’d write about it and he could arrest them–in other words, it was a complete setup. Arpaio would certainly have had a motive for his vendetta against them. Lark and Lacey’s New Times had consistently exposed the Maricopa Sheriff Department’s offensive and immoral actions, and sending them to prison would clearly help to take some of the heat off of Arpaio.

Mr. Lacey says that when President Trump was sworn into office, Arpaio “rode his coattails” knowing that many of his supporters were also supporters of Trump.

They believe that the President pardoned a man he knows committed wrongful actions as sheriff to bolster his own political stance and please his constituents, and it would certainly appear that Lacey and Larkin raise a compelling point.

Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey are longtime supporters of Latino rights in their state of Arizona, first met at Arizona State University. In 1970, both of them dropped out to found the Phoeinix New Times with Jim Larkin taking care of advertising and Lacey acting as executive editor.

The paper was created to fight against the hyper-conservative local media’s coverage of antiwar protests on the ASU campus, but it soon began to cover a wide array of social and political issues from a liberal-minded point of view.

The paper soon expanded, and is now part of a large conglomerate of like-minded papers such as the Village Voice and the L.A. Weekly.

Larkin and Lacey were jailed by Sheriff Arapaio in 2007, but they were released after 24 hours due to widespread outrage, and a later investigation showed that the grand jury warrants were issued illegally by a prosecutor who was working with Arapaio. In 2013, Maricopa County paid the duo 3.75 million dollars to settle a wrongful arrest lawsuit that they brought against the county.

Soon after, their company became known as Village Voice Media Holdings, and although it was sold in 2012, they continue to be politically active, largely through their publication Front Page Confidential.

Both Mr. Larkin and Mr. Lacey have since been awarded multiple journalistic honors, including a Pulitzer Prize.

As A United Force Of Good, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey Continue The Fight Against Sheriff Joe Arpaio

In times of unrest and turmoil, we often see people coming together for the same cause. Such is the story of Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, two media executives who were wrongly accused, arrested, detained and victimised by Joe Arpaio.

While the constitution of the United States of America, protects its citizens’ rights and grants them freedom of speech, Joe Arpaio did not think this was needed. He blatantly denied these two media journalists their civil rights as they have recently created a cover piece article in the Phoenix New Times publication.

Joe Arpaio was known for committing many misdeeds in his career as Maricopa town’s sheriff. While most people were only aware of the horrific racial profiling, discrimination and segregation based acts he had committed, after the arrest of Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, the world soon understood that the sheriff was also a master at getting vengeance against people who dint nod in agreement at his every demand. Fortunately for Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, justice did come to their rescue, and 24 hours after they were arrested, they were let go. Their arrest led to an acquittal not because Joe Arpaio finally understood the error of his ways; it was because of a nation-wide demand that these innocent media executives get justice sooner rather than later.

One would imagine that being the victims to such senseless acts of cruelty, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey would admit defeat and cower for their lives.

Hiding from the world, however; was not the fate of Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey as they emerged stronger and all the more dedicated to getting justice not only for themselves but also for the Latino community that was constantly being tormented by Joe Arpaio.

A legal battle soon took place between Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey versus the Maricopa County. In 2013, the Maricopa County was ordered by an appellate court judge to give Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey a settlement of $3.7 Million for the suffering they had endured due to the actions of the sheriff.

As one united force of good, together, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey founded the Frontera Fund with the settlement amount the received from the tiring legal battle. This Fund was wholly dedicated to undoing the harm done by Joe Arpaio and his kind while preventing further crimes being committed on the Hispanic Community living in Arizona.

Does the story end here and did Joe Arpaio get his just desserts? Unfortunately not, but this was the very beginning of a revolution. While most people believed with conviction that Joe Arpaio would finally and rightfully get his comeuppance for victimising Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, an unexpected incident occurred that left many people stunned in disbelief.

Known to be a supporter of President Donald Trump, Joe Arpaio, once again dodged a bullet when the President granted him a pardon. While this disappointed many people in more levels that can be imagined, this release did not in any way dissuade Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey from continuing their fight against injustice.

With the Frontera Fund, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey continue to do as much as good as possible and as quickly as they can.
